Open House and an Update

After seemingly finding the magic cocktail of meds at the hospital to control Jen’s nausea and vomiting, they are no longer working.  Hospice continues to try options to make Jen more comfortable.  However, right now, any liquids or movement out of bed triggers more vomiting.  So she is in bed and using oxygen.

Jen’s highlight this week was going to Corbin’s Open House at his new school on Thursday night.  It was her sheer determination that carried her through the evening.  Corbin enjoyed being  her chauffeur, pushing her wheelchair around the school.

We are reading your emails and comments to Jen as your prayers and support are so comforting to her and our family.

With love from Jen and her family

I can imagine the ear to ear grin on Corbin’s face as he showed you around, Jen. 🙂 While I have not met Corbin in person, through your stories and pictures, I feel as though I know him as a courageous, kind, warm hearted little boy who is going to grow up to be an amazing man… Thanks to his incredible mommy. Love you, Jen.

HI Jen! I can only imagine proud little Corbin showing you his school and showing you off. He’s so proud of you! So happy you were able to go to the open house.

While I know you are having family read emails and posts to you, can we send cards somewhere? I know the posts and emails mean the world to you but seeing cards around your room when you open you eyes will show you the love and support from all of us. You won’t have to read to feel the support, you’ll just see it.

I’m praying for the nausea to lighten up and hope that the weather allows you to get a little more fresh air. It was excessively hot last week so hoping this week is better for you. Sending all my love, Joni Utnage

My heart aches for you and your family as I read about the pain and discomfort you are in. I know there is nothing I can say or do to ease what is happening, and my heart truly breaks for you. I do hope you take peace in knowing how many lives you have touched by being who you are. The most important one being, Corbin’s. You have given him a lifetime of memories…More memories than most that live to 100 would have.
My dad died at the age of 45 after a brief 13 week battle with cancer, that summer as he lay up in bed and we would take care of him, he would tell us daily, “it doesn’t matter if you live to be 45 or 85 it’s how you live your life!” He taught me more in my too short time with him than anyone else ever has. He taught me to live my life, because of him I don’t take one day for granted…it’s a gift!
Jen, you have truly lived your life in every sense of the word…doing things that people only dream of doing in a lifetime. And you have made the most beautiful memories while doing that with Corbin, he will forever have those memories. Corbin will forever know that with all your greatest achievements and accomplishments, he is your #1.
Corbin will forever be so proud to be Jen Smith’s one and only son…that is legendary!                                                                    You are legendary!!!

RJ and I have been praying for you and your family every night. I am so sorry to read that you are in so much pain and feeling so sick. You are truly a fantastic mother, friend, daughter, sister and a warrior. I admire you so much. You have inspired so many people. You have changed the way people look at life (me being one of them). I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to know you in college and to have reconnected, even if for a short time, again later in our lives.

Corbin is a wonderful little boy and I know he will always be proud to have you as his mom!

“What is dying? I am standing on the seashore. A ship sails to the morning breeze and starts for the ocean. She is an object of beauty and I stand watching her till at last she fades on the horizon, and someone at my side says, “She is gone.” Gone where? Gone from my sight, that is all; she is just as large in mast and hull and spar as she was when I saw her, and just as able to bear her load of living freight to its destination.

The diminished size and total loss of sight is in me, not in her; and just at the moment when someone at my side says, “She is gone,” there are others who are watching her coming, and other voices take up the glad shout, “There she comes!”–and that is dying.”

Thank you for setting an example how to live and die. I am especially grateful for your recent comments about Hospice – and passed them along to an aunt who just this week was informed she has no treatment options left. I have great regard for your faith walk and ask God for dying grace. Nausea is exhausting and all-consuming and I hope your care providers find a new magic cocktail. When I think about Corbin I think about how he is now old enough to have created his own memories of and with you… and how you have made that happen. Well done, mama Jen.

Jen, I read your second book this weekend and was touched beyond words. You are hands down the most amazing person I have ever had the priviledge to know. You continue to give of yourself and think of others in the face of your own pain and exhaustion. I am so glad and impressed that you were able to power through Corbin’s open house this week. I know it meant a ton to him to share that with you and I hope it will give you peace and comfort getting to better know his new school and teacher. You and your family set an amazing example of love, committment and compassion that many of the rest of us can only hope to achieve some day. You and Corbin are in my thoughts many times throughout each day and I pray for you with every one of those thoughts. I pray for your comfort and for many more moments and memories with Corbin.

Jen, I spent the greater part of this past Saturday reading through your old LiveJournal entries. Gosh, it feels like a lifetime ago when we were all talking feeding schedules and baby sleep issues. I really do feel blessed to have known you, even if we will never meet in person. It sounds so trite and cliche, but I mean this – I have learned from you. You have shown me how to live with abandon. How to really, really live.

You are such a light, Jen. Your life has been so full of hope and joy and gratitude. What a wonderful, beautiful life. I admire you greatly, and I will never forget having known you. Never. Thank you for always being so open and honest, and for letting so many people into your life. If I could take a piece of your pain and shoulder it for you, I would. We all would.

The world will be a darker place without you in it. I look forward to meeting you on the other side.

Until then, much love to you, precious, beautiful Jen.

Addition heartfelt words beyond what have already been expressed so eloquently by all other ‘lovers of Jen’, escape me. I too, want to reiterate all the same sentiments already said. Additionally, I would like to say, THANK YOU for your willingness to be an authentic and mighty vessel for God’s use with your faith throughout the journey you’ve traveled. The number of lives affected for Eternity and the Glory of God’s Kingdom is beyond measure. I also thank you for immensely impacting my life with not only two books, but with three. The third, Seasons of Grief, which I received from you almost immediately after the sudden death of our son, is just one more testimony added to the mountain of others, exemplifying how you selflessly poor yourself out in love, compassion, and generosity for the welfare of others.

A special way I express my love and adoration beyond words to my college freshman daughter while not being in her physical presence, I now offer to you as well…From my heart to yours, a huge hug which I express to you by means of an…((((air hug)))) !! Hope you felt it. 😉

My family will be forever blessed by you, and will faithfully continue to pray for your family always.
