I’m in denial that summer is quickly coming to a close, but thought I’d post a brief update and a plea for help. Last week I went to IU Cancer Center in Indianapolis. They are research-based and a teaching hospital. I met with an oncologist and LOVED her! We talked for over an hour about what my goals (maintain a good quality of life and extend my quantity of life) as well as my options. She summed it up by saying to evaluate my options with two questions.
1. Will it (specific treatment) make me feel better?
2. Will it help me live longer?
She had recommendations of two different chemo cocktails that I can receive here in Champaign, which is great! Next week I’m headed to Cancer Treatment Centers of America (yep, the one with all the commercials) outside of Chicago. In contrast to IU, this is a very holistic approach where you meet with an entire team that works closely together. I’ll have my scan up there to see if this current treatment is working. They will also make recommendations on what options they feel are most beneficial.
Now my plea for help! Think less people are dying of breast cancer? Nope, think again. About 40,000 a year! So many of you have asked how you can help…and there IS something you can do to help! I’m not in to politics, but I am in to finding an end to breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Coalition has created the Breast Cancer Deadline of 2020. To me, that’s a long way off, but here is what we need to do to reach the goal.
Check out Breast Cancer Deadline 2020 to sign a petition to the President and learn about who is supporting the act.
If you live outside of Illinois; find out who is (and is NOT) supporting the act from your state. I’ve also included suggested questions for contacting offices directly (see below):http://www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org/what-we-do/policy/co-sponsors-of-hr-3067.html

Rep. Tim Johnson
Health Legislative Assistant (aka person who handles health issues on behalf of Representative Johnson): Ben Brockschmidt
1. Call D.C. office
2. Ask for Ben Brockschmidt
3. Ask why Johnson doesn’t support Accelerating End of Breast Cancer Act and ask that he do so
A. We need to make ending breast cancer national priority, and this is a bi-partisan effort cosponsored already by 14 out of 19 Illinois Congress people.
B. No more incremental advancements; too many are still dying. In fact 110 people will die today of breast cancer.
C. This act would create a committee made up of scientists, political leaders, and consumer advocates.
D. No money is being requested.
E. Committee would 1.) work on preventative vaccine and 2.) understand and stop metastases, which is why 90% of women die of the disease.
You don’t have to be experts–just concerned citizens. The more people who call, the better!!
